Dope Thief

Ray Driscoll and Manny Carvalho are lifelong friends in Philadelphia. They pretend to be DEA agents while they rob drug dealers. One robbery links them to a large narcotics network. The two men then run from criminals, real agents, and the results of their own choices. The story mixes violence, dark humor, addiction, grief, family history, guilt, and friendship as the men struggle to leave crime behind.

The show places a black man and a Latino man at the center of the crime story. Several women and people of color also have important roles, including DEA agent Mina. Viewers can easily see this representation, but identity politics do not control the plot. The story focuses more on loyalty, addiction, family, grief, damaged friendship, and escape from crime. The marketing emphasizes the friendship and crime plot instead of a diversity message. The show does not present major political dialogue, identity-based themes, cultural criticism, canon changes, or anti-woke conflict.
