The story repeatedly centers refugees, poor Red Zone residents, debt, forced sex work, and unequal access to medical care. Theo is shown with his male partner Anthony, and their relationship affects the season finale. Laura treats sick Red Zone residents instead of serving wealthy clients. These themes matter to the season, but they remain secondary to the corporate spy story.

The show presents corporations as governments that control jobs, food, medicine, housing, and personal freedom. The Green Zone and Red Zone divide turns wealth and private power into the main source of social order. The plot repeatedly shows monitoring, debt prisons, forced contracts, and the sale of human bodies. The season links this crisis to climate damage and weak government, making its anti-corporate message a major part of the story.

NewsBusters described the show as a liberal attack on corporations, capitalism, and global warming. The supplied X search found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. The available backlash was limited to one conservative media article.
