Modern Love Mumbai is a six-part drama anthology set in everyday Mumbai. Each episode follows different people as they face love, family, marriage, loneliness, desire, or change. The stories include a Kashmiri woman rebuilding her life, a gay man hiding his relationship from his grandmother, and an Indian-Chinese family facing change. The show moves between warm comedy, romance, sadness, and social drama. The show gives visible space to queer love, female desire, women’s independence, and minority communities. Several stories question strict family roles and the idea that women should give up their dreams for marriage. “Baai” makes a gay relationship central to its story, while other episodes explore identity and freedom through family conflicts. These ideas matter to the season, but the show mainly focuses on personal relationships instead of political speeches.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Modern Love Mumbai.
Woke representation / casting
The anthology gives prominent roles to a Kashmiri Muslim woman, a gay Muslim man, an Indian-Chinese family, and several women with strong personal goals. The casting fits Mumbai’s varied population. The repeated focus on different identity groups makes representation a clear part of the design. Interviews and promotion also described the project through diversity and inclusive stories.
52%
Woke political dialogue
“Baai” includes discussion of religious memory, family acceptance, and a gay man’s fear of being honest. “Raat Rani” includes ideas about a woman’s right to leave an unhappy marriage and live freely. These points appear in story conversations. The season does not often use direct activist speeches.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The season repeatedly centers women’s independence, female desire, queer love, minority identity, and resistance to strict family expectations. “Baai” makes a gay relationship and social acceptance the main conflict of one episode. “Raat Rani” treats a Muslim woman’s escape from marriage as a path to personal freedom. Other episodes question age rules, male control, and women giving up creative goals.
64%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Several stories show traditional family roles as harmful or unfair. “Cutting Chai” questions a marriage where the wife’s writing dreams are pushed aside. “My Beautiful Wrinkles” challenges age rules around female desire. “Raat Rani” rejects control by a husband and social expectations. The show does not mainly attack Western institutions or use repeated modern political language.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This factor does not apply to the show. The show is a new local anthology based on the Modern Love format. No established character, historical figure, or known canon is changed through an identity swap.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called “Baai” Hindu-oppressor and Muslim-oppressed propaganda built around a gay male story. The post had no visible likes or wider pickup. No sustained anti-woke campaign was found. No major news controversy was found.
8%
Creator track record context
The main creators include people with repeated work about women’s agency, queer identity, minorities, social injustice, and family pressure. Ishita and Rangita Pritish Nandy have built a strong women-centered streaming profile. Several directors and writers also have clear socially aware careers. The group includes more neutral creators, so the score is high but not near the maximum.
