2018 · Based on 1 season, 3 episodes through December 11, 2018 ·
In 1963 London, Alison Wilson is a quiet wife and mother whose world breaks apart when her husband Alec dies. A woman then arrives and says she is the real Mrs Wilson. Alison searches through papers, old memories, and Alec’s secret work in British intelligence. The story moves between the 1940s and 1960s and has a tense, sad, and slow tone.
The show keeps its main focus on women who were deceived by the same man. Alison, Gladys, and Dorothy face the harm caused by Alec’s lies and protect their children from the truth. Alison becomes more active as she checks records, questions officials, and decides what her sons should know. The story gives a mild women-centered message about marriage, trust, and male entitlement, but it does not build its drama around current identity politics.

Identity-driven story themes
The show repeatedly places women’s experiences at the center of the story. Alison, Gladys, and Dorothy face the same man’s betrayal, and their different choices are compared. Alison gains a stronger voice as she checks records and decides how to protect her sons. The message is a mild women-centered view of marriage and male entitlement, not a modern race, sexuality, or DEI campaign.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Alec uses marriage, secrecy, and his status as a man to control several families. The women are left to carry the emotional and family damage after he dies. The show treats this male entitlement and the limits placed on wives as serious problems. It does not turn the story into a broad attack on Christianity, Britain, or current Western institutions.
23%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series dramatizes a real family story from Alison Wilson’s memoir and later research. No woke identity or DEI change to a known character or historical event is clearly reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints, defenses, boycotts, or review-bombing. Reviewed news and audience coverage mainly praised the acting and unusual true story.
0%
Creator track record context
Anna Symon has a mild women-centered track record, and Ruth Wilson often chooses stories about women’s agency and exploitation. Wilson also produced this personal family story. The other cached creators show little or mixed activist evidence. The context raises the score slightly, but it does not show a strong shared woke agenda.
