2021–2022 · Based on 2 seasons through April 19, 2022 ·
Pacific Rim: The Black follows teenage siblings Taylor and Hayley Travis after Kaiju destroy Australia and the defense forces abandon the continent. The siblings find an old Jaeger called Atlas Destroyer and use it to search for the parents who never returned. They travel through ruined cities and dangerous settlements while fighting Kaiju, smugglers, cultists, and their own fear. The show is dark, violent, and sad, but it also values family, courage, and hope.
The show puts Hayley, a teenage girl, at the center of the rescue mission and gives Mei a major role as a trained fighter and pilot. Season 2 also makes the Sisters of the Kaiju a female-led cult that controls hybrid monsters and tries to use Boy as a messiah. These choices make female action characters and a female power group easy to notice, but they serve the monster plot rather than a real-world diversity message. The story's main message is about family, loyalty, hope, and whether a dangerous creature can still choose to protect people.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Pacific Rim: The Black.
Woke representation / casting
The show places Hayley and Mei in major pilot, fighter, and decision-making roles. The Sisters of the Kaiju form a visible female-led cult with a female High Priestess. The story uses these choices for the survival and Kaiju plot, and it does not frame them as a diversity or empowerment cause.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on survival, family, monsters, and pilot decisions. It does not present current political talking points or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The show asks whether Boy can remain himself after becoming a Kaiju, but this is a human-monster plot rather than a real-world identity or DEI message. Family loyalty and hope drive the main arc.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show has a failed defense force, smugglers, and a violent cult, but it treats them as survival-story threats. It does not make a modern critique of Western culture, family life, or social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series adds new characters and new Kaiju lore to the Pacific Rim world. It does not rewrite a known character or historical figure around race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No verified anti-woke complaints were found in the available X pass or broader coverage. Public discussion focused on pacing, animation, darker tone, and lore.
0%
Creator track record context
Most of the key creatives have no strong public record of activist or DEI advocacy. Greg Johnson's public comments about this show focus on new characters, emotion, and the Pacific Rim world. Craig Kyle has publicly expressed a wish to make X-23 gay in another story. Travis Beacham co-created Carnival Row, which uses fantasy to explore racism, colonialism, and oppression, but those ideas are not a clear focus here.
