2023–2025 · Based on 2 seasons through July 10, 2025 ·
Charlie Cale can tell when people lie, but her gift also brings danger. After she exposes a murder at a Las Vegas casino, she leaves her old life and drives across America in her old Plymouth Barracuda. She takes small jobs, meets strangers, and solves a new murder or crime almost every week. Season one follows her fight against a casino family, while season two lets her travel more freely before a new enemy pulls her into a deadly trap. The show uses a funny, rough road-trip tone with dark crimes, odd jobs, and guest characters.
The clearest audience-visible woke element appears in season two episode nine, where an older woman begins a lesbian romance with a younger con artist who targets her home and kills her granddaughter. Charlie also fills the classic wandering detective role as a tough, highly capable woman, and the cast repeatedly places women and minorities in major guest roles. The show treats these choices as part of its modern world instead of building whole episodes around speeches about identity. Most stories instead focus on lies, greed, loneliness, friendship, and personal justice, so the identity material is real but secondary to the crime plots.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Poker Face.
Woke representation / casting
The show puts a woman in the classic wandering detective role and lets her story run without a romance goal. Johnson and Lyonne have framed that choice as a deliberate update to old male-led detective TV. The cast also repeatedly gives women and minority actors major roles as bosses, artists, athletes, criminals, and investigators. Season two adds a full lesbian romance plot, but the series does not turn casting into its main subject.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Charlie calls a dog a “MAGA dog” after it calms down to a right-wing radio host in season one. The joke mocks a conservative media voice. A season one case also gives two aging activists violent speeches about killing the children of war criminals, but the story condemns their plan. The show has no sustained modern activist lecture, so this is a very small signal.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Charlie is a woman who takes the lead in a role that old detective shows usually gave to men. The show presents her toughness and moral authority as normal, without making her prove a gender argument. Season two episode nine gives a full murder plot to Anne’s lesbian romance with Kate, including sex, betrayal, and revenge. The rest of the series focuses on truth, greed, loneliness, and friendship, so identity themes are noticeable but not the main story.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Only a few small conservative accounts called the show woke or political, and some said they quit after season one or early season two. Tiny posts also blamed season two guest casting for making the show worse. A Christian review warned families about what it called woke content, but it focused mainly on strong language, sex, violence, and a world without Christ. No boycott, review-bomb drive, large influencer campaign, or organized cancellation push was found.

Creator track record context
Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne are the main creative voices, and both have public links to progressive or LGBTQ-related causes and stories. Clea DuVall adds a strong queer-visibility background among the directors. Mary Vernieu has spoken about diverse role models, while most of the other listed writers and directors have neutral or low activist profiles. This makes the creator track record clearly relevant, but the team is mixed and the show is mainly a crime comedy.
