2016–2019 · Based on 4 seasons ·
Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a rough Texas preacher who carries a supernatural power called Genesis. Genesis lets Jesse command people, and it sends him after God when God abandons Heaven and Earth. Jesse travels with Tulip O'Hare, his skilled former partner, and Cassidy, an Irish vampire who drinks too much. The show moves through small towns, New Orleans, Hell, Heaven, and secret groups while it mixes bloody fights, sex jokes, horror, and dark comedy.
The clearest audience-visible woke elements are the casting of Tulip and Cassidy's bisexual love story. The comic drew Tulip as a white blonde woman, but the series uses mixed-race actress Ruth Negga in the major role and makes Tulip a top fighter, driver, and leader. Cassidy is shown as bisexual and has a real romance with the male vampire Eccarius in season three. These elements are visible, but the main story still centers on faith, friendship, revenge, family pain, and the search for God.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Preacher.
Woke representation / casting
Ruth Negga plays Tulip, a mixed-race lead who is a major fighter, driver, and leader. The comic drew Tulip as a white blonde woman. The show makes this change highly visible because Tulip stays at the center of the story. The creators also described the choice as an intentional way to avoid an all-white cast and make the story feel more like 2016.

Woke political dialogue

Identity-driven story themes
Cassidy is shown as bisexual. He loves Tulip and later has a romantic relationship with the male vampire Eccarius in season three. The show treats both relationships as real parts of his character. Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy's main mission remains a search for God, not a fight about identity.
27%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Jesse's main quest starts with his anger at God for leaving the world. The show presents Heaven, Hell, angels, the Grail, Jesus, the Pope, and church leaders as corrupt, foolish, selfish, or grotesque. The series uses sex, gore, and jokes to mock Christian authority. The story still asks serious questions about faith, guilt, love, and redemption, but its attack on Christian institutions remains a major part of the show.
65%
Woke character or canon changes
The comic drew Tulip as a white blonde woman. The series cast mixed-race Ruth Negga and made the change on purpose. The producers said they wanted to avoid an all-white cast and make the story more of its time. The show also updates Tulip as a highly visible action lead, but the race change is the clearest identity-driven change to the source.
44%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some online comic fans objected to Ruth Negga playing Tulip because the comic drew Tulip as white. Those complaints treated the choice as a race swap. News reports found much stronger religious anger over blasphemy, sex, gore, and the treatment of God. The anti-woke complaints were limited and did not become a major public campaign.
10%
Creator track record context
The key team is mostly known for edgy comedy, fantasy, and satire rather than activist work. Sam Catlin said the casting choices were not made to address social issues or diversity mandates. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen made an intentional diversity choice with Tulip, while Garth Ennis's work mainly attacks religion and power. The show was not framed as a social-justice project.
