2022–2025 · Based on 2 seasons through August 25, 2025 ·
Ridley follows Alex Ridley, a retired detective inspector who returns as a police consultant in rural Lancashire. His former trainee, Carol Farman, now leads the local team and brings him into difficult murder cases. Ridley carries heavy guilt after his wife and daughter die in a house fire, while Carol balances police work, marriage, and raising children. The show uses slow, serious mysteries, family drama, grief, drug crime, and Ridley's repeated jazz singing.
The clearest identity-focused element is Carol's marriage to Geri and their two-mum family. Their home life appears across both seasons, with a new baby, a teenage son's trouble, and talk about family roles and sperm donation. The police team also places a black senior officer, a South Asian detective, a female pathologist, and several women in skilled jobs at the center of the cases. These choices are easy to notice, but the show stays mainly about murder investigations, grief, violence, abuse, and family secrets instead of activist politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ridley.
Woke representation / casting
The main team includes a black senior officer, a South Asian detective, a female pathologist, and two women who lead investigations and technical work. Carol is a lesbian detective with a wife from an Asian background, and both women are shown as capable professionals. The show's press material calls the group a diverse core team, and Bronagh Waugh discusses the female view of women high in police ranks. The show is set in modern Britain, so the mix is possible for the setting, but the identity pattern is still very visible.
55%
Woke political dialogue
Carol and Geri discuss their two-mum family, having another child, and sperm donors in season 1. Carol says that both women are Jack's mothers, and the family treats same-sex parenting as normal. The show has no repeated speeches about DEI, gender politics, or activist causes.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
Carol's same-sex marriage and two-mum home are recurring parts of the family story across both seasons. Season 2 adds a baby, Jack's trouble, and scenes about how Carol and Geri share work and parenting. Carol and Wendy are repeatedly shown as skilled women who lead cases, while Ridley learns to work under his former female pupil. The show still spends most of its time on murder cases, grief, and family crime, so identity is a strong side thread rather than the main story.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Geri is described as a university social science lecturer who joins marches and sit-down protests. Goodwin's character history says a black police officer has to work twice as hard to rise through the force. Season 2 also shows a controlling and violent man whose police friends hide earlier complaints. These points add mild activist and gender-power ideas, but the cases do not attack Western institutions as a main subject.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Ridley is an original ITV crime series. It does not adapt a known character, book, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small X accounts called the cast a diversity checklist and complained about the Black senior officer, the lesbian detective, and her family. A Digital Spy discussion made similar complaints about the show's diversity boxes and the gay female inspector. The reaction was low reach and spread across a few viewers, with no major outlet, boycott, or review-bombing drive. The complaints were aimed at identity and DEI-style casting rather than ordinary plot quality.
28%
Creator track record context
Paul Matthew Thompson, Jonathan Fisher, Julia Gilbert, Ingrid Goodwin, and Germaine Sweet have available creator scores of 0. Their careers mainly cover British crime, mystery, and drama work. Juliet Charlesworth has a score of 15 because some past projects include identity-related stories. No strong activist or DEI record is reported for the key creators and producers.
