2020 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through January 1, 2020 ·
Kat Baker is a gifted figure skater in the Idaho resort town of Sun Valley. After a hard fall causes a head injury and fear on the ice, she tries to rebuild her career as a pair skater with Justin Davis, a rich and troubled former bad boy. Kat also hides her bipolar disorder while dealing with her unstable mother Carol, her younger sister Serena, and the pressure of Olympic competition. The show is a dark adult drama with soap-opera romance, family fights, sexual danger, drinking, self-harm, and painful sports injuries.
The clearest woke elements are side stories about race and sexuality rather than the main skating goal. Marcus is a black skier in a mostly white sport, and his dating life leads to direct talk about race. Dasha’s past and later contact with Tatiana show that she once loved a woman and gave up that relationship for skating. These themes return across several episodes, but the season mainly centers on mental illness, trauma, family damage, and the cost of elite sport, not on political debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Spinning Out.
Woke representation / casting
The show places Jenn Yu, a Chinese-American skater, among its main competitors. The show makes Marcus Holmes’s experience as a black skier in a mostly white sport part of his story. Alana is another visible non-white character in the resort world. This is a noticeable representation pattern, but race is not the center of Kat’s main plot.
32%
Woke political dialogue
Marcus and Alana talk about his place as a black skier in a mostly white sport. Alana also jokes about his lack of experience with black women and his past dating choices. These lines are identity-focused, but they appear in a small side story and do not drive the season.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Dasha’s backstory follows her lost love Tatiana, a woman she loved before choosing skating. The show returns to Dasha’s feelings in later episodes when she looks up Tatiana and considers inviting her to the rink. Marcus and Alana’s story also returns to race and his place in skiing. These stories matter, but Kat’s bipolar disorder and family conflict remain the main focus.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show shows harm from a sports doctor and harsh coaches. Those conflicts stay inside the sports story and do not become a broad modern activist critique of Western institutions or culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Spinning Out is an original series, so it does not change established characters or source canon.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A Reddit discussion said the show tried to cram in many woke issues. Several comments called the Marcus racism story and Dasha’s former female lover tacked on to look woke. The complaint was limited to a small fan thread, and major reviews did not repeat it.
16%
Creator track record context
Samantha Stratton has a stored creator score of 27/100 because her work includes mental health, racial experiences, and queer characters. The listed producers have stored scores from 2 to 18 and no clear activist public record. The title-related interviews focus on skating and mental health, so creator context is a mild supporting signal.
