Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Star.
Woke representation / casting
The casting heavily features identity signaling. The show made history by casting openly transgender actress Amiyah Scott to play Cotton, a transgender main character. It also features Miss Lawrence, a genderfluid actor, in a prominent role. The main trio is intentionally designed to represent diverse backgrounds, including a biracial girl and a rich black girl. The queer casting adds significant weight under our rules.
92%
Woke political dialogue
Characters speak openly about white privilege, racism in America, systemic bias in the justice system, and transphobia. For example, Queen Latifah's character Carlotta delivers passionate speeches and songs defending her transgender daughter from verbal abuse. The dialogue frequently uses activist language to frame modern social issues.

Identity-driven story themes
The narrative relies heavily on identity politics and social-justice topics. Major plots center on Cotton's gender-affirming surgery, a DACA immigration fight ending in an ICE deportation, and a main character choosing to get an abortion. These progressive themes are front and center. Under our rules, the central queer storylines add massive points to this category.
94%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series strongly critiques key Western systems. It portrays the foster care system as deeply abusive and dangerous. The police and justice systems are depicted as corrupt and racially biased. It also criticizes traditional religious groups for transphobia. These critiques are framed through a modern activist lens.
