2017 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through April 13, 2017 ·
The Blacklist: Redemption follows Tom Keen, a trained spy and former criminal who joins Halcyon Aegis, a private team that takes on jobs the government cannot handle. Susan “Scottie” Hargrave runs the group, but Tom soon learns that she is his birth mother and that his father, Howard, is still alive. Tom is pulled into a family fight while he works missions involving kidnappings, terrorists, spies, and stolen weapons. The show uses fast action, secret plans, violence, and a darker family mystery.
One episode gives clear attention to refugees seeking asylum after a German official tied to an anti-immigration group kills them with nerve gas. Halcyon treats the rescue as a moral duty, so the episode carries an activist-style message against anti-immigration politics. The main team also puts a capable woman in charge and gives a black woman and a black man important combat roles, making representation visible in the hero group. These points are noticeable, but the season mostly stays focused on espionage, family secrets, and people with unclear morals.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Blacklist: Redemption.
Woke representation / casting
The show puts Susan “Scottie” Hargrave, a white woman, in charge of a private military company. The show gives Nez Rowan, a black woman, a skilled operative role and gives Matias Solomon, a black man, a major action role. This makes diversity visible in the heroic core team. The show does not frame the group as a formal diversity campaign.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Episode 5 names an anti-immigration group and links it to a German official who kills refugees. The heroes speak about protecting asylum seekers and stopping the attack. The rest of the season uses Russia, black sites, and intelligence work as thriller material. This gives the show a clear political point in one episode, but the dialogue is not a repeated focus.
20%
Identity-driven story themes
Episode 5 makes refugees seeking asylum the center of its crisis. The story presents an anti-immigration movement as the source of a mass killing. Halcyon then treats the refugees’ rescue as a moral duty. The theme is strong in that episode, but it does not continue through the other seven episodes.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show questions secret agencies, black sites, and private military power as part of its spy plots. It does not repeatedly attack Western family life, religion, traditional gender roles, or culture through a modern activist message.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series expands Tom’s family history and moves him into a new team. Those are ordinary franchise story changes, and no identity-driven rewrite of a known character or real person appears.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaint about the show. Web coverage found story and ratings discussion, but no real complaint that the title pushes DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
The creators and most writers have low cached scores and no record of activist or identity-focused work. Director Elodie Keene is a clear outlier with a strong record of queer and female visibility work. She directed the refugee-centered fifth episode, but her role covers only one episode.
