2022 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through September 8, 2022 ·
The Imperfects follows three young adults in Seattle and nearby parts of the Pacific Northwest. Abbi Singh studies genetics, Tilda Weber sings in a punk band, and Juan Ruiz draws graphic novels. A gene treatment they received as children begins to change their bodies, giving Abbi dangerous attraction powers, Tilda a deadly voice, and Juan a violent chupacabra form. They search for the scientist who changed them while a secret agency and other altered people close in. The show mixes science fiction, monster fights, dark jokes, gore, and a strong found-family mood.
Abbi says that she is asexual, or ace, and she develops romantic feelings for Hannah, another woman whose life was also changed by the treatment. Their relationship returns through the season and makes Abbi’s identity part of the main story. The three leads form a visibly mixed group, and several women hold the main science, leadership, and fighting roles. The show presents being different and choosing one’s own identity as positive ideas, but the main plot stays focused on monsters, science, friendship, and the search for a cure.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Imperfects.
Woke representation / casting
The main trio includes a South Asian female genetics student, a Mexican male artist, and a white female punk singer. The show also gives major science and power roles to women, including Burke and Finch. This mix is plausible for a modern Seattle and Portland story, so ethnicity alone is not a strong mismatch. Heaton said the team intentionally wanted broader diversity and more female characters. That public framing and repeated female-centered casting support a clear but not dominant score.
33%
Woke political dialogue
Sarkov gives a short speech linking damaged human genes to population growth and the coming climate crisis. That idea explains why he wants to rewrite humanity. The show treats this as a mad scientist’s reason for his plan, not as a long political debate. The rest of the season focuses on science, danger, and personal choice instead of activist speeches.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Abbi says that she is asexual, or ace, in the first episode. She later develops romantic feelings for Hannah, a woman, and their relationship returns across the season. The show treats Abbi’s identity and their relationship as meaningful parts of her personal story. The larger monster plot also presents being different and choosing one’s own identity as positive ideas.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show attacks unethical scientists and a secret government group, but it does not turn that conflict into a modern activist attack on Western culture, family, religion, or gender roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Imperfects is an original series and does not change an older character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small Reddit thread called the show “Diversity Du Jour” and treated its women-led, diverse cast as a Netflix identity statement. Another comment objected to the lack of normal positive white male characters and mocked the female group. These comments were isolated and did not become a major news story. Most public reaction focused on writing, genre appeal, and the cancellation.
12%
Creator track record context
Dennis Heaton and Shelley Eriksen have stored scores of 0/100 and 10/100. Most listed writers and directors have low or mild scores, while a few producers have LGBTQ or social-justice documentary credits. Heaton’s direct statement about intentional diverse and female casting gives stronger context than the crew’s general work history. This supports mild background context rather than a strong activist record.
