The Loudest Voice is a seven-part drama about Roger Ailes, the man who built Fox News into a powerful conservative network. The story follows him from the 1990s launch of Fox News through the 9/11 attacks, the Obama years, and the 2016 election. Ailes fights rivals, workers, journalists, and his own fear of losing control while he shapes news into political entertainment. The tone is dark, angry, and often grim because the show links his private abuse to the public power he creates.
The clearest woke elements are the repeated focus on Ailes's treatment of women and the idea that his workplace uses female bodies and careers as tools. Gretchen Carlson and other women are shown resisting sexual pressure, recording what happened, and helping bring him down. The show also presents Fox News as an institution that turns fear, claims about Barack Obama's birthplace, and attacks on political opponents into a political weapon. These ideas drive the final episodes and return throughout the season, but the series remains a biography of a powerful conservative media boss rather than a story built around race, queer identity, or diversity.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Loudest Voice.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show casts actors to play real people in a mostly white Fox News workplace. It does not make diversity or identity the reason for its casting choices.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Roger Ailes repeatedly talks about Republican strategy, Fox News, Barack Obama's presidency, immigration, terrorism, and Donald Trump. The newsroom debates whether news should serve facts or conservative goals. Ailes pushes fear, birth-certificate claims, and attacks on political enemies as tools to win viewers. The political talk drives nearly every episode, so the anti-conservative message is hard to miss.
52%
Identity-driven story themes
Ailes treats female anchors and staff as bodies to control, and he links jobs to sexual access and obedience. Gretchen Carlson and Laurie Luhn face pressure, harassment, and career damage. Carlson uses recordings and a lawsuit to challenge him, while other women add evidence. The theme becomes central in the last two episodes, but it focuses on sexual abuse rather than queer or race identity.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series presents Fox News as a powerful institution that blurs news and propaganda, spreads fear, and helps build the world that leads to Trump. Ailes uses surveillance, threats, and loyalty tests to control workers. The show also treats his sexual abuse as part of a workplace culture that protects powerful men. This critique returns across the season and shapes the show's view of conservative media.
58%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show dramatizes real people and events, but it does not make a woke identity or DEI change to them.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One review called the series a “liberal bedtime story” and said it mainly confirms what the left already believed about Fox News. The separate X pass found no anti-woke campaign or named complaints. The reaction was too small to count as major public backlash.
14%
Creator track record context
Tom McCarthy has liberal views but no strong identity politics record. Gabriel Sherman has a stronger pattern of critical reporting on Roger Ailes and conservative media power. Sherman framed the show as a story about the world before Trump. This context supports the show's political critique, but it does not show a strong DEI or queer focus.
