Twilight of the Gods is an adult animated series set in a brutal version of Norse mythology. Sigrid is a half-giant warrior who survives the slaughter of her family when Thor attacks her wedding to King Leif. She gathers a band of fighters, travels through strange lands, and seeks revenge against the gods. The show mixes bloody battles, graphic sex, dark magic, and a love story, but its first season ends before Sigrid's revenge is complete.
The show gives a woman the central heroic role and shows several women as fighters, rulers, or powerful gods. It also includes Aile, a trans woman who carries on a magic role, and Egill, a bisexual poet whose past and love story receive clear attention. The story often presents male gods as cruel rulers who treat women and mortals as property, while Sigrid leads the fight against them. These identity and gender themes are visible across the season, but the main plot remains a revenge quest rather than a modern political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Twilight of the Gods.
Woke representation / casting
The show puts Sigrid, a woman, at the center as a top fighter and leader. It also gives major roles to women such as Hervor, Freya, Hel, and Aile. The main voice cast includes black actor Paterson Joseph as Loki, Indian-British actor Rahul Kohli as Egill, and trans actor Jamie Clayton as Aile. No interview frames the mix as a diversity campaign, so this is a clear but limited representation pattern.
31%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show does not use modern political speeches about parties, identity policy, capitalism, or current activism.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The season includes Aile, a trans woman who carries on the Seid-Kona's magic role and joins the main quest. Egill is bisexual, and episode six gives his sexuality a clear place in his backstory and his bond with Aile. The show also repeatedly places women in charge of fights, magic, and major choices. These identity-driven themes recur across the season, but revenge against Thor remains the main story.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show attacks violent gods and slavery inside its fantasy world, but it does not turn that conflict into modern criticism of Western institutions, capitalism, Christianity, or family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The show makes the Seid-Kona a trans woman who continues her mother's female magic role. That is an identity-based change to a mythic role, and Aile joins the main quest and returns in later episodes. Other changes, such as Sigrid's half-giant origin and Thor's villain role, mainly serve the new revenge plot rather than a diversity message.
22%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small X accounts called the show woke or Netflix woke nonsense because a woman leads the quest, the cast is diverse, and the season includes trans and bisexual characters and same-sex scenes. Other posts complained about a feminized Thor, weak male characters, and disregard for Norse history. The reaction was fringe, with no large campaign, boycott, or major news controversy.
15%
Creator track record context
Eric Carrasco has a progressive track record that includes advocacy for BIPOC writers and earlier TV work with immigrant and transgender themes. Zack Snyder has spoken about liberal views, women's rights, and inclusion, but his projects are mostly genre stories. Jay Oliva has no known activist or identity-focused record. The creators give moderate supporting context, although their title interviews focus on Norse myth, love, revenge, and the freedom of adult animation.
