Wilderness follows Liv Taylor, a Welsh woman living in New York with her husband, Will. She learns that Will has had a long affair and plans to leave her. Liv uses a trip through American national parks to begin a revenge plan. The show is a dark, tense thriller about marriage, betrayal, murder, and guilt.
The story often presents Liv’s anger as a response to male betrayal and control. It questions the role of the obedient wife and shows women being blamed for violence and sexual choices. Liv also has sex with her female neighbor, Ash, which adds a clear queer element. These ideas support a noticeable identity-driven and gender-focused message, but the show remains mainly a revenge thriller.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Wilderness.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives a major supporting role to Ash, a black female neighbor who becomes Liv’s close friend and sexual partner. The story also includes diverse police and workplace characters in modern New York. The casting is plausible for the setting, so it does not create a strong representation-first pattern.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Liv says that men are not expected to be nice while women are not expected to be angry. The story repeatedly links female anger to social pressure and judgment. The dialogue supports a gender-focused message, but it is not a constant political debate.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
The story centers on a woman rebuilding her life after being treated as an obedient wife. Liv’s anger, self-worth, and fight to control her own life shape every episode. The show asks viewers to understand her revenge even when she becomes violent. Liv’s sexual relationship with Ash adds a clear queer element.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents marriage and traditional wife duties as harmful parts of Liv’s past. Will uses money, marriage, and threats to control Liv after his affair is exposed. The story often shows women being blamed for anger, sex, and violence. These ideas recur across the season, but the show does not attack many wider institutions.
