The fight over Native land and the Duttons’ right to hold it runs through the whole series and ends with the ranch sold to Broken Rock so it stays undeveloped. Plots also cover violence against Indigenous women and white-supremacist villains. Brief lesbian characters and a gay kiss appear in the background. The last seasons and finale make the land-return idea much clearer than the early cowboy crime story alone.

The show often treats big developers, coastal money, and land-grab politics as the real threat. It also questions how white ranchers first took land. At the same time it still honors ranch work, family loyalty, and tough traditional men and women, so it is not a full attack on classic Western life or faith.

After the finale, many conservative fans and commentators called the land sale to the tribe woke or a betrayal of the show’s base. Some right-leaning critics had already said the Native and anti-corporate themes were progressive. For most of the run the bigger public label was “anti-woke,” so the anti-woke backlash is real but strongest at the end.

Lead creator Taylor Sheridan scores low on woke track record in the stored summary and often argues against woke culture in Hollywood. The other listed writers, directors, and producers also have low stored scores with no clear activist pattern.
