A Fantastic Woman follows Marina, a young singer and waitress who lives in Santiago, Chile. After her older lover, Orlando, dies suddenly, Marina is left to grieve while his family and the police question her place in his life. She faces pressure over the funeral, the apartment, their dog, and her own body. The film mixes quiet grief with dreamlike scenes, harsh insults, music, and moments of courage.
Marina is a transgender woman, and her identity drives nearly every major conflict. Much of Orlando’s family refuses to treat her as his partner, while officials question her name, body, and right to mourn. The story takes Marina’s side and says that she should be allowed to define herself, keep her dignity, and be accepted. It also shows a trans woman as a lover, singer, and determined survivor rather than only as a victim. These ideas are not a side message because they shape the plot, the main character, and the ending.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Fantastic Woman.
Woke representation / casting
Marina is a trans woman, and Daniela Vega is a trans actress. The casting matches the lead’s identity and makes the representation choice visible. Lelio said he wanted a trans actress after meeting Vega, and press coverage highlighted that decision. The rest of the main cast does not form a broad diversity pattern.
25%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeatedly uses lines about Marina’s name, body, and right to be seen as a woman. Police officers and Orlando’s family challenge her identity and relationship. Marina answers with demands for respect and the right to grieve. The dialogue makes identity central to several scenes, but it does not include a long activist speech or policy debate.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
Marina’s transgender identity drives the main conflict after Orlando dies. Orlando’s family, the police, and other officials treat her as suspicious or illegitimate. Marina fights to attend the funeral, keep her dog, and claim her place as Orlando’s partner. The ending presents her singing as a choice to keep living openly. The story’s message about self-definition and acceptance is central from beginning to end.
92%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Police officials use Marina’s old legal name, question her relationship, and order an invasive body exam. Orlando’s family uses control of the funeral, home, and dog to deny her place in his life. The film presents family and state systems as sources of cruelty toward a trans person. The story does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or Western culture as a whole.
52%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story about Marina. It does not change an established character, source, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A Movieguide review called the film politically correct and said it supports a radical feminist and transgender view. Several small X accounts later called the Oscar a win for a gay lobby or called the film trans propaganda. The supplied X research found no boycott, review bomb, or broad English-language campaign. The complaints stayed fringe and did not become a major news story.
