Moonee is a lively six-year-old girl who lives with her young mother, Halley, in a cheap motel near Disney World. Moonee spends the summer exploring the motel grounds with Scooty and Jancey, while Bobby, the motel manager, watches over the children. Halley loves her daughter, but she cannot keep steady work or pay the weekly rent. The bright games slowly give way to fear when Halley’s choices bring police and child welfare workers to the motel.
The film uses a child’s view to show the gap between Disney’s fantasy and the hard life around it. Halley sells cheap perfume and later turns to sex work as she tries to keep a roof over Moonee’s head. Welfare rules make her struggle harder, while child protection workers bring a painful test of the family bond. The film’s strongest theme is childhood wonder. It also focuses on family love, poverty, and the loss of security.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Florida Project.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Casting is demographically consistent with a poor white Southern family and local community; no forced diversity, gender swaps, or visible identity signaling in lead or supporting roles.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue is sparse and naturalistic, centered on everyday survival and play with zero activist, political, or social-justice oriented speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Story engine is childhood wonder and maternal struggle against poverty; no arcs or messaging built around race, gender, sexuality, or identity affirmation.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film places poor motel families beside Disney World’s wealthy tourist world. The story shows low wages, weekly rent, welfare rules, charity aid, and child-protection action pressing Halley and Moonee. The film shows these systems through daily events instead of activist speeches. The story questions how poor families are treated, but it does not offer a clear anti-capitalist program.
23%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No documented backlash accusing the title of woke propaganda, forced representation, anti-male messaging, or similar; reception was largely positive and apolitical.

Creator track record context
Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch often tell stories about poor or stigmatized people. Baker’s earlier Tangerine used transgender leads, and he has spoken about reducing stigma around sex work. Producer Darren Dean has a stronger record of LGBTQ and minority-focused stories. This gives the project a mild activist signal, but The Florida Project itself is mainly about class, family, and childhood.
