Amanda Riley is a careful Los Angeles travel executive whose boyfriend ends their five-year relationship instead of proposing. Her boss sends her undercover on a group tour in Vietnam to judge a small family travel company. Free-spirited guide Sinh keeps throwing away Amanda's plans and shows her cities, food, village life, and Tết. Their growing romance becomes harder when Amanda hides her work mission and her former boyfriend arrives.
The tour group includes Sam and Dom, two black women who are married and raising their teenage daughter, Robin. The film treats their family as normal and keeps them visible in group scenes, but their sexuality does not drive the plot. The main romance pairs a White American woman with a Vietnamese American man, while Vietnamese characters lead most of the trip and teach Amanda about the country. The stronger story is about leaving a safe routine, telling the truth, and choosing a more open life.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Tourist's Guide to Love.
Woke representation / casting
The small tour group is visibly built as a wide mix. Sam and Dom are black married women traveling with their teenage daughter, and the family stays visible in group scenes. The group also includes an older White couple and a young White male vlogger. Sinh and the other Vietnamese characters fit the Vietnam setting, so the score comes mainly from the designed supporting group.
36%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not discuss modern activist causes, race policy, gender politics, or party issues.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Sam and Dom's marriage and shared parenting are clear, and their family returns across the tour. The story treats the family as normal and friendly. The film gives them no conflict about being lesbian and no identity speech. Their steady presence makes this a mild, repeated identity theme rather than a main plot.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The movie favors local travel over rigid schedules, but it presents this as Amanda's personal lesson. The story does not attack Western culture, men, religion, family, or capitalism.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original characters and does not change known people or older source material.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Metacritic user review said the movie's “WOKEness” made it worse. The film's married lesbian family is the clearest visible woke element, but the reviewer did not say it caused the complaint. Other visible reactions focused on the plot and scenery. The anti-woke response is isolated and weak.
