Maggie Quinn and Jack Russo are childhood friends who host a local morning radio show in Chicago. Their families also share a struggling jazz club called The Magnolia, and a chance to take the show national depends on a big New Year's Eve broadcast. When both friends are dumped, they pretend to be a couple for their families and listeners so they can win a national broadcast deal. The plan brings old feelings into the open and turns a light holiday comedy into a gentle friends-to-lovers romance.
The film centers on friendship, family ties, honesty, fear, and the choice between career success and a real relationship. Maggie and Jack lie for ratings, but the story treats the lie as a problem they must finally admit and repair. Maggie stays caring and direct, while Jack is kind but afraid to speak honestly. The ending supports love, family, work shared with a trusted friend, and the courage to risk rejection.
