Alma Imhoff is a respected philosophy professor at Yale who is waiting for a decision about tenure. After a party at her home, her star PhD student Maggie says that Alma’s friend and fellow professor Hank crossed a sexual line with her. Hank denies the claim and says Maggie is angry because he accused her of copying parts of her thesis. Alma tries to protect her career and decide what to believe while her own secret about a past accusation begins to surface, giving the film a dark and uneasy tone.
The film makes race, sex, gender, and power part of the central conflict. Maggie is a black queer student, and her partner Alex is nonbinary, so the story shows how their identities affect life inside an elite university. Characters argue about #MeToo, cancel culture, patriarchy, white male control, and the way institutions choose good public optics over clear moral action. The movie gives both the older professors and the younger activists serious flaws, so it questions campus politics while still treating the accusation, unequal power, and women’s experience as major concerns.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for After the Hunt.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives major roles to a brilliant black queer PhD student and her nonbinary partner. Maggie’s race and identity affect how the accusation is discussed, and her role is central rather than background. A modern Yale setting makes this cast believable, so there is no clear historical mismatch. The casting still makes identity a visible story signal, and the writer said Maggie’s race became important after Ayo Edebiri joined.
32%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeatedly has professors and students debate #MeToo, cancel culture, identity labels, patriarchy, and power at an elite university. Maggie says white people turn a black woman’s assault into a story about themselves. Alma warns that higher education is controlled by white men who can decide who gets hired. Campus protests and public accusations keep these ideas tied to the main conflict. The story also lets older and younger characters criticize each other, so the message stays mixed.
61%
Identity-driven story themes
The film builds its main conflict around a black queer student, a nonbinary partner, and a white female professor who failed to support her. Maggie’s race, sexuality, and place in the university shape how people judge her accusation. Alma and Maggie argue over women, power, mentorship, and the different rules faced by their generations. The movie treats identity as part of the moral question instead of using it as a side detail.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Hank’s flirting, anger, and refusal to stop kissing Alma as signs of male entitlement. Alma and Kim say that older women survived by accepting a patriarchal system. Yale leaders focus on optics, jobs, and damage control while students demand accountability in public protests. The movie also mocks and questions the protesters and the accusation process, so its attack on the institution is mixed.
49%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about fictional Yale professors and students. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small or anonymous X accounts called the film woke, ideological propaganda, or a new level of WOKE. One mid-size right-leaning account objected that a white man’s racial-persecution claim was pushed aside by a black woman’s discrimination claim. No boycott, review-bombing drive, or large-account campaign appeared. Other right-leaning posts called the film anti-woke, so the backlash was sparse and mixed.

Creator track record context
The cached context gives Luca Guadagnino a 54/100 score because his films often explore queer desire and fluid sexuality. The same context gives Nora Garrett 0/100 and describes the producers and other listed crew as mostly professional figures without strong activist records. Title interviews show Garrett focusing on power, survivor stories, and gray areas after #MeToo. She also said Ayo Edebiri’s casting made Maggie’s race important, while Guadagnino expanded the generational and identity conflict.
