Maggie is a careful single mother and college writing teacher from New York. She takes her troubled teenage daughter, Summer, to a Tuscan village so they can repair their strained bond. Summer wants to return to her boyfriend, while Maggie meets Luca, the Italian man she once loved. When Summer and Luca’s mother Carmen steal Luca’s car and head for Rome, Maggie and Luca chase them across Italy. The movie uses a warm but uneven mix of romance, family trouble, road comedy, and pretty Italian scenery.
The story gives Summer a short romantic moment with Ermenegilda, a female farm worker, after Summer turns away from a boyfriend who wants her to take blame for his drug case. Summer also says that marijuana laws oppress poor people, calls Italy corrupt, and uses words about fascism, genocide, Occupy Wall Street, and patriarchy. Maggie, Summer, and Carmen make many of the story’s big choices, while the men mostly chase them or cause trouble. These woke elements are easy to hear but appear in short jokes and side moments, while the main story stays focused on love, family, freedom, and second chances.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for All Roads Lead to Rome.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives Summer a brief romantic connection with Ermenegilda, a female farm worker. The rest of the main cast fits the New York and Italian setting, with American, Italian, Spanish, and British characters. The film does not frame this casting as a wider diversity campaign.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Summer says marijuana laws let the state oppress poor people. She calls the legal case an injustice and describes Italy with talk of fascism and social inequality. She jokes about native American ancestry and genocide, refers to Occupy Wall Street, and later calls honor a patriarchal idea that can be made gender-neutral. These lines appear in several short exchanges across the movie, so the politics are noticeable without becoming the main plot.
45%
Identity-driven story themes
Summer has a brief flirtation with Ermenegilda after she turns away from Tyler. Maggie, Summer, and Carmen drive many of the story’s major choices, while Luca and Tyler mostly chase them or cause trouble. The ending links Summer’s new freedom to rejecting Tyler and to a line about moving beyond patriarchal ideas. The main story still centers on family, romance, and personal responsibility.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Summer says the state uses marijuana laws to oppress poor people. She describes Italy as corrupt and names fascism and social inequality. She also calls honor an old patriarchal idea. The film uses these ideas in jokes and arguments, but it does not build its main story around attacking Western institutions or religion.
33%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original romantic comedy about fictional characters. It does not adapt established characters or retell a real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke or right-leaning complaints were found in the reviewed public discussion. The available reactions mainly attacked the weak plot, jokes, acting, and pacing.
0%
Creator track record context
Ella Lemhagen has a moderate record of stories about gay families, outsiders, and vulnerable people. Josh Appignanesi has a smaller liberal and climate-activist signal, while Cindy Myers has no known activist pattern. This background supports some context for the film’s justice and identity lines, but the movie remains a light romance rather than a creator-led campaign.
