Alex Lainey is a high school senior in a small California town. After strange lights appear over a quarry, she nearly drowns and wakes with dangerous powers and no memory of what happened. Her old friend Sean takes her in, even though he must care for his sick grandmother and younger brother. The two teens run from police and a secret group while Alex’s powers grow, giving the film a tense but quiet science fiction tone.
The story gives Alex the special powers and makes her the key to first contact with beings from space. Sean becomes her helper and protector, but he also carries the emotional weight of the story as he risks his life to stay with her. The government group is secretive and harmful when it captures and studies Alex. The main themes are friendship, sacrifice, family duty, fear of the unknown, and hope for a peaceful meeting with beings from space.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for At First Light.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Alex is a teenage girl with the film’s powers, while Sean is a male helper and caretaker. The film does not present these casting choices as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. A background news report mentions President Trump and immigration, but no character argues for a modern identity or activist cause. The main dialogue covers family problems, strange powers, danger, and first contact.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Alex’s powers make her a science-fiction bridge to beings from space. Her change leads to fear, sacrifice, and friendship, not a story about race, sex, sexuality, or activist identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The secret group captures and studies Alex, and the film treats it as a dangerous part of the alien mystery. The story does not connect that conflict to modern attacks on capitalism, patriarchy, Christianity, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Alex and Sean. It does not change a known character, source story, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Web searches found complaints about slow pacing, weak answers, and a familiar plot, not claims that the film pushed DEI, identity politics, or left-wing ideas.
0%
Creator track record context
Jason Stone’s interviews describe a hopeful first-contact story about teenagers, not an activist project. Andrew C. Erin’s known work centers on horror, thriller, and science fiction projects. Casting director Ilona Smyth has a public diversity-mentoring record. The producers’ public profiles are mostly business and genre focused.
