Voyagers follows Christopher and Sela, two young crew members raised for a long trip through space. In 2063, Earth is damaged by pollution and disease, so thirty young people leave on a mission to build a new home on a distant planet. The crew was bred for intelligence and taught to obey, while one adult scientist watches over them. The film turns tense and violent when the young people learn that a blue drink has been hiding their fear, anger, and desire.
Christopher wants the truth, but Zac uses the crew’s new feelings to gain power. Zac spreads a false story about an alien and turns fear into violence. Sela grows from a quiet medical officer into a brave leader who helps stop him and protect the mission. The story presents her strength as hopeful, but its main message is about free choice, self-control, selfishness, and the danger of leaders who use fear.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Voyagers.
Woke representation / casting
The crew is shown as a mixed group of young men and women, with Black, South Asian, East Asian, and white performers in visible roles. The official production notes call the group a diverse cast, which makes diversity part of the public presentation. The main power struggle still centers on white characters, and the future setting can support a mixed crew. The film does not make race, religion, or gender identity part of the plot.
18%
Woke political dialogue
The crew debates whether to obey the mission or act freely after learning about Blue. Zac spreads a false alien story and uses fear, rumor, and mob action to take control. Neil Burger said the film became a commentary on pandemic confinement and leaders who use fear. The message is a broad warning about power and misinformation, not a current identity or party argument.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Sela is the main female protagonist and the chief medical officer. She moves from a quiet role to helping Christopher defeat Zac and lead the crew after the crisis. Lily-Rose Depp described Sela as becoming herself and agreed that women can save the world, which gives the arc an empowerment tone. The film still treats the conflict mainly as a question about human nature, not as a debate about gender or identity.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows mission planners hiding information and using Blue to control the crew, but it does not connect that abuse to Western institutions or modern identity politics. Its criticism stays inside the survival plot and does not attack family life, Christianity, capitalism, or traditional gender roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about a new crew and setting. It does not change established characters, canon, or real historical events.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Major reviews and fan discussions focus on pacing, acting, violence, sex, the ending, and the weak use of the premise. No sustained anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or casting appeared in the coverage checked.
0%
Creator track record context
Neil Burger has a mainstream career with no known activist pattern. Mary Vernieu has discussed the value of representation, while the other listed creators have little public activist context. The title-specific interviews focus on human nature, fear, control, and self-sacrifice. The available creator context gives only a mild supporting signal for woke content.
