Black Crab follows Caroline Edh, a soldier and former speed skater who is separated from her young daughter during a civil war. Years later, the army sends her with five other soldiers across frozen islands near Stockholm. They must carry secret containers to a base behind enemy lines, and Caroline is promised a reunion with her daughter if she succeeds. The movie is cold, grim, and tense, and the soldiers face thin ice, armed enemies, and their own fear.
The film puts a woman at the center of a dangerous military mission, and Caroline is skilled, stubborn, and often the strongest member of the group. The story also uses a mixed Nordic team, including Malik and Karimi, but it does not turn their backgrounds into a political speech. The film changes the lead from a man in the source novel to a woman, and her role stays tied to being a mother rather than a message about female power. The main themes are motherhood, military lies, fear, sacrifice, and the danger of using a biological weapon.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Black Crab.
Woke representation / casting
The film places a woman in the lead role of a military survival mission, even though the source novel used a male lead. The six-person team includes a woman captain and prominent roles for Dar Salim and Ardalan Esmaili, giving the group a broader background mix than an all-Swedish unit. The director said he wanted an eclectic cast and that Sweden had changed, but he also said the group was built around people who could skate. The public material does not frame the cast as a diversity campaign.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The soldiers discuss orders, fear, survival, and the war. They do not give speeches about identity, gender, DEI, or current activist causes.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes a highly capable woman the main action hero and keeps her at the center of the mission. Caroline faces fear, injury, mistakes, and hard choices, so the story does not present her as an unbeatable symbol of female power. Motherhood and personal sacrifice drive her more than any modern gender message.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows military leaders lying to soldiers and treating them as tools in a war. That conflict stays within the war setting and does not become a modern attack on men, family life, Christianity, conservatism, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes Edh from a man in Jerker Virdborg's novel to Caroline Edh, a woman. The change shapes the central character, her role as a mother, and the reason she accepts the mission. The film does not turn the change into a spoken gender debate.
47%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research pass found no anti-woke complaints, and the reviewed news and audience discussions focused on plot, pacing, acting, and the ending. No sustained complaint that the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging was found.
0%
Creator track record context
The available creator records show no sustained activist or identity-politics campaign. Adam Berg has a low recorded score of 10, and Jeanette Klintberg has 14. The writers and producers have recorded scores of 0. These records give the title only a weak signal.
