Blinded by the Light

Javed’s British-Pakistani Muslim identity drives the story. He faces racist abuse while arguing with his father about religion, family rules, work, and his wish to write. The film presents friendship across Pakistani, Sikh, and white communities as a way to resist division. These themes appear throughout the family, school, romance, and protest scenes.

The film presents Thatcher-era unemployment and factory closures as causes of family hardship. Javed’s father expects his wife and children to follow his rules, and Javed calls out the unfair burden placed on women. The National Front and racially insensitive parents are shown as threats to immigrants, while the film links this past anger to the Brexit era. The criticism is repeated, but it supports Javed’s personal growth instead of becoming a full attack on Western institutions.

National Review described the movie as a shallow celebration of wokeness and an anti-Brexit joke. A small audience review complained that the film has too many woke characters for 1987. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction, boycott, or review bombing. The backlash was real but limited.

Gurinder Chadha has a 68/100 cached creator score and a long record of stories about South Asian identity, women, and cultural change. Paul Mayeda Berges has a 50/100 cached score, and Sarfraz Manzoor has a 48/100 cached score. Their background fits this film’s focus on a British-Pakistani family, race, class, and cultural belonging. Chadha’s Brexit comments add clear activist context.
