Renee Lomito-Smith is a veteran police officer in Swinton, Louisiana. She returns to duty after a suspension, a fight with a civilian, and the drowning death of her young son. When a fellow officer is brutally killed during a traffic stop, Renee and rookie Danny Holledge search for the cause. The case becomes a dark supernatural thriller as Renee alone can see a strange figure in damaged police video.
Renee learns that the deaths connect to officers who killed a black deaf boy and helped hide the truth. The boy’s mother carries her own grief, and the ghost becomes a force of revenge against the officers involved. The story treats police corruption and racial injustice as the cause of the main horror. The film presents a flawed but determined black woman as its central hero.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Body Cam.
Woke representation / casting
The film places a black woman at the center as the veteran officer who solves the case. The film also gives other black characters major roles, including the grieving mother and the child whose death drives the plot. The director described Renee as a strong, smart black woman balancing police work and family, and as a character he had not often seen on screen. The modern setting makes the casting believable, but the clear identity framing adds a mild representation signal.
27%
Woke political dialogue
The film uses direct talk about police killing a black child and officers hiding the evidence. The officers say they must stay united, and a senior officer says he only needs to erase the footage. The opening and later investigation keep returning to police cover-up and public anger. The dialogue supports a modern police-accountability message, but the film does not fill most scenes with political speeches.
35%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes the killing of a black deaf boy the reason for the ghost’s revenge and the police deaths. The story shows officers hiding the truth while the boy’s mother and other families live with grief. The black woman lead must decide whether loyalty to her unit matters more than exposing its actions. The supernatural plot turns police violence and racial injustice into the movie’s main moral conflict.
68%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents the police department as an institution that protects its own officers after a child is killed. The department destroys or hides video evidence and pressures officers to stay loyal. The story treats police power and the department’s loyalty code as sources of danger, not just as background for a monster hunt. The criticism stays focused on police corruption and does not attack every Western institution.
56%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses fictional officers and a fictional town. It does not change a known character, canon, or real historical event.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several small X replies to the 2018 announcement called the black-child and white-cop premise one-sided race politics. One low-engagement reply mocked the idea with a story about ICE workers and immigrants. Another small reply said the film weakened claims that all white people are racist. The available evidence shows fringe noise, with no large campaign, boycott push, or review-bombing wave.

Creator track record context
Malik Vitthal has a record of work about Black life, inequality, and representation. His Body Cam interviews describe the film as a way to discuss police corruption, grieving mothers, and the moral duty of a black woman officer. John Ridley has a strong record of stories about race and inequality. The other key crew members have no clear activist record, so this context mainly comes from Vitthal and Ridley.
