Elly is a young botanist who moves to a small desert town near San Diego to study a plant that does not belong there. After she finds a crashed drug plane, the injured pilot Tomas holds her at gunpoint and makes her guide him to a drop point. The sheriff, his teenage daughter Alex, and a violent drug receiver search the desert while Elly and Tomas struggle across the heat. The movie is a tense survival thriller with quiet scenes about grief, fear, and hard choices.
Elly uses her knowledge of the desert and her will to stay alive, while Tomas explains how lost work and a sick father pulled him into the drug trade. Alex is a bold teenager who refuses to stay safe when her father is in danger. The film treats the drug crisis as a human problem and shows how guilt, addiction, and family loss can trap people. Its main focus stays on danger, survival, forgiveness, and the bond that grows between two people who begin as enemies.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Borrego.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film places a white female botanist at the center and includes Latino characters in a present-day California border setting. The cast choices fit the location and plot, and the marketing does not frame them as a diversity campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers drugs, grief, work, family, and survival. It does not push modern identity, gender-role, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story focuses on survival, addiction, grief, and forgiveness. Elly’s skill and Alex’s courage serve the thriller plot rather than a repeated message about women or identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The sheriff is shown trying to find Elly and protect his daughter. The film does not build a modern attack on police, family, Christianity, capitalism, or traditional social rules.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One detailed IMDb audience review objected to the film’s messages about the drug trade and Mexican-American life. The reviewer said the film made drug workers too sympathetic and wrongly suggested that local people did not care about Mexican-Americans. The complaint is isolated, while the X research pass found no anti-woke posts and no broad news dispute.

Creator track record context
Jesse Harris has a recorded score of 0/100 and no strong public record of activist or identity-focused work. Lucy Hale has a recorded score of 29/100 because she has supported gender equality, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and women’s equity work. Greg Lauritano, Tiziano Tucci, and Damiano Tucci have recorded scores of 13/100, 5/100, and 11/100. This is limited creator track record context, and the film does not strongly use those outside views.
