BRATS is a 2024 documentary movie written and directed by Andrew McCarthy. In the film, McCarthy travels across the country to meet with his former co-stars from popular 1980s teen movies. They talk about the term Brat Pack, which was given to them in a famous 1985 magazine article. The main conflict is how this label affected their careers and their personal friendships for decades. The tone of the film is highly nostalgic, quiet, and reflective. The documentary focus remains heavily on the personal memories of the actors and how they dealt with sudden fame. During the interviews, the stars talk about their feelings of isolation and how they eventually learned to accept their place in pop culture history. The film also includes a brief conversation with the journalist who created the nickname. Viewers get to see old clips from classic movies and hear stories about what it was like to work together on set.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for BRATS.
Woke representation / casting
As a documentary, the film features the real-life historical actors from the 1980s. A pop culture critic is briefly interviewed to note the lack of diversity in 1980s youth movies, but this is a minor contextual addition and does not represent any active diversity casting or identity-driven signaling.
10%
Woke political dialogue
The film does not contain modern political messaging, activist scripts, or social justice lecturing. There is only a very brief mention by a media critic about the lack of racial representation in the era's films, which is not framed as an activist demand.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
The narrative is entirely centered on fame, media labeling, and career impact. It does not explore identity politics, systemic privilege, or gender struggle, keeping the focus strictly on the personal psychology of the actors involved.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film critiques the media landscape of the 1980s and the sensationalist nature of celebrity journalism, but it completely avoids modern activist critiques of Western institutions, capitalism, patriarchy, or traditional social norms.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
