Diego Maradona follows an Argentine football star who rises from a poor neighborhood in Buenos Aires to become a hero in Argentina and Naples. The film centers on his years at Napoli, where his skill brings titles, huge crowds, and a new sense of pride to a struggling southern city. Maradona fights pressure from fans, reporters, teammates, crime figures, and his own bad choices. The story moves from loud victory to drug use, family pain, shame, and a lonely fall.
The film shows Maradona as both a kind, insecure man and a proud, famous player who can hurt people around him. His victory for Argentina against Italy in Naples turns a football match into a painful fight over loyalty and local pride. The film also follows his parties, affairs, an unrecognized son, cocaine use, and ties to the local crime world. Old television footage, private tapes, interviews, and Maradona’s recorded voice create a fast and emotional portrait of talent, fame, and ruin.

Creator track record context
Kapadia has a moderate left-leaning public record, including pro-Palestine cultural boycott pledges and support for left-wing UK politics. His recent work has included criticism of populist and right-wing figures, but his documentaries about sport and music are mainly observational. The other listed producers have little or no documented activist record.
