Christy follows Christy Martin, a young woman from a small West Virginia town who discovers that she can make a living as a boxer. She rises from local fights to become one of the best-known female fighters in America, while her trainer Jim Martin becomes her manager and husband. The story moves from bright fight-night excitement to a dark account of control, fear, and domestic violence. Christy must survive both the pressure of fame and the danger inside her own home.
Christy's lesbian identity is a major part of her private life and shapes the main conflict outside the ring. Her mother treats rumors about her sexuality as shameful, and Christy hides her love for women while married to Jim. Her bond with boxer Lisa Holewyne gives the story a clear love story between two women and a path toward a life chosen for herself. The film also shows how male control and pressure to look like a normal wife keep Christy trapped.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Christy.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast portrays real people from Christy Martin’s life, including the white West Virginia boxer and the real promoter Don King. The film does not show an engineered diversity pattern or a representation-first casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on boxing, family pressure, sexuality, and abuse. It does not contain recurring speeches about political parties, laws, or activist causes.

Identity-driven story themes
Christy hides that she is a lesbian because her family and husband treat her sexuality as shameful. Her mother pushes her toward a normal life, and Jim uses marriage to keep her under his control. Christy’s relationship with Lisa Holewyne gives the story a clear same-sex love story. Her identity shapes the family conflict, marriage, and escape from abuse.
76%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Christy’s mother treating lesbianism as something to hide and pushing her toward a traditional family life. Jim uses marriage and male authority to control Christy, while the story presents his masculinity as dangerous and abusive. The film challenges conservative family and gender roles, but it does not build a broad attack on Western institutions.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film follows the real boxer Christy Martin and keeps the major known parts of her life, including her sexuality, boxing rise, and attack by Jim Martin. No reported identity-driven rewrite of a known character or event appears.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts called the film woke because it centers a lesbian boxer and LGBTQ themes, and some blamed its poor box office on “get woke, go broke.” A niche anti-woke film account mocked it as a lesbian boxer vehicle and said conservative men would skip it. No large right-wing campaign, boycott, or review-bombing effort appeared.

Creator track record context
David Michôd’s stored score is 18, and his past work is not strongly activist. Mirrah Foulkes’s stored score is 45 because her work often deals with misogyny and women’s stories. Sydney Sweeney’s stored score is 28, with support for women’s rights and LGBTQ representation but no strong activist pattern. The film’s creator comments focus on coercive control, survival, and telling Martin’s story.
