Laura is a quiet Finnish student who studies ancient sites in Moscow in the late 1990s. After her older girlfriend cancels their trip, Laura boards a train to Murmansk to see ancient rock drawings. She must share a tiny sleeping room with Ljoha, a loud, drunk Russian miner who first treats her badly. The cold journey feels tense, funny, lonely, and slowly more hopeful as the two strangers learn to trust each other.
The film gives Laura a same-sex relationship with Irina, and the breakup starts the journey. Laura later tells Ljoha that her partner is a woman, but the film does not turn that fact into a speech about rights or politics. The main story follows Laura and Ljoha as they move from fear and anger toward friendship and a close bond that never gets a simple name. The film treats kindness, loss, class, language, and human connection as more important than labels, while Ljoha’s rude macho behavior remains a clear part of the conflict.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Compartment No. 6.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Laura is played by a Finnish actor and Ljoha by a Russian actor in a story set between Finland and Russia. The film does not frame the casting as a diversity goal or build a one-of-each group.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film does not use spoken lines to push modern identity, DEI, gender-role, or activist ideas. Ljoha’s crude sex talk and Russian pride show his personality, not a political program.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes Laura’s relationship with Irina a same-sex relationship, and that breakup starts the train trip. Laura hides that fact at first and later tells Ljoha that she had a girlfriend. The relationship remains important through her phone calls and memories, but the main arc follows the bond between Laura and Ljoha. The story presents loneliness, trust, loss, and human connection more strongly than LGBTQ politics.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Ljoha using macho bravado, sexual insults, and unwanted touching when he first meets Laura. Laura resists him, and his macho behavior blocks the trust that grows later. The story also presents him as kind and vulnerable, so it does not make a broad attack on men or Western institutions. The film does not target Christianity, capitalism, or conservative family life.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
The source novel has the young Finnish woman leaving a boyfriend behind, while the film gives Laura an older girlfriend named Irina. This is a clear sexuality change to the source material. The change shapes the opening party, Laura’s breakup, her phone calls, and her later confession to Ljoha. The film does not add a wider rights campaign or identity speech around the change.
45%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. X reaction contained no anti-woke complaints. Searches of audience and news coverage found ordinary praise, pacing complaints, and a separate dispute about the Russian actor, not a sustained claim that the film pushes woke or DEI ideas.

Creator track record context
Director Juho Kuosmanen has a mostly humanist record and says this film is about people and emotions, not politics. Writer Rosa Liksom has a stronger record of activist and social criticism, while producers Emilia Haukka and Jussi Rantamäki have supported queer-inclusive and other socially aware films. The other named writers and producer have little public record of activist or identity-driven work. This gives the title some creator-context weight, but the film itself stays personal and low-key.
