Dave is a jobless artist who wants to finish one important project. He builds a cardboard maze in the living room while his girlfriend Annie is away. When Annie returns, she finds Dave trapped inside and leads their friends into the maze to rescue him. The maze becomes a strange world filled with shifting rooms, paper creatures, deadly traps, and a Minotaur. The film uses silly jokes and bright handmade designs beside sudden horror.
Annie is a practical woman who leads the rescue and pushes Dave to face the danger he created. A filmmaker in the group briefly says that movies often show women as incomplete without men. He asks Annie to discuss gender stereotypes while she is trying to save Dave, but she tells him to stay focused. That scene gives the film a small modern feminist message, but the main story stays focused on creativity, fear, friendship, and the pressure to finish a project.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dave Made a Maze.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The movie uses a modern mixed friend group, with Meera Rohit Kumbhani as Annie, but it does not make race or diversity a story point. Annie’s leadership comes from the rescue setup and is not framed as an identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Harry briefly says that movies often show women as incomplete without men. He asks Annie to discuss gender stereotypes while she is trying to save Dave. Annie tells him to stay focused, so the scene stays short and comedic.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Annie leads the rescue and pushes the group forward. The film briefly jokes about women being shown as needing men. Dave remains the central failed and dependent artist, so the story does not turn into a repeated girlboss pattern. The main themes are creativity, fear, friendship, and finishing a project.
27%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Harry briefly criticizes media portrayals that treat women as incomplete without men. He tries to turn Annie’s rescue into a question about gender while filming her. The film does not continue this media critique or attack religion, capitalism, conservatives, or other Western institutions.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about a cardboard maze. It does not change an established character, source story, or historical figure for an identity reason.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke or anti-left complaints were found in the supplied X evidence or reviewed public coverage. Public discussion focused on the handmade sets, strange humor, and Dave’s creative problems.

Creator track record context
Bill Watterson’s cached score is 0/100 and shows no clear activist record. Steven Sears’s cached score is 55/100 and reflects his female-led Xena work and gender representation discussions. Carlos Cuscó’s cached score is 54/100 because he produced a documentary about transgender athletes. These scores create a mixed context, while this movie itself is not framed around those issues.
