Filmmaker Kirsten Johnson faces a hard truth: her father, Dick, is getting dementia. She is scared of losing him the way she lost her mother. So she makes a movie with him. They stage fake, funny deaths and dreamy “heaven” scenes. The tone is warm, sad, and often darkly funny. The story is about love, memory, and time running out.
The movie stays on family life and death. Viewers see a real dad and daughter talking, joking, and coping as his mind slips. The big ideas are mortality, how movies can hold a person in time, and how people care for someone they love. Those themes sit at the center from start to finish.

Creator track record context
Several key people have progressive social-issue documentary records. Director Kirsten Johnson and producers such as Katy Chevigny and Marilyn Ness are known for justice and reform nonfiction. Editor-writer Nels Bangerter has also cut LGBTQ-subject films. That history is real progressive work, not a loud DEI brand, and this movie stays personal.
