Army Ranger Jackson Briggs is hurt and stuck after war. He wants back into the service. His old boss says he can help if Briggs drives a tough military dog named Lulu to a friend’s funeral. They travel the Pacific Coast. The trip is funny, rough, and sad as both man and dog deal with stress and loss.
The movie is mostly about vets, PTSD, and a man bonding with a dog. Viewers will notice a few modern culture jokes more than a big social agenda. In Portland, women put Briggs down with lines about war and big oil. Two free-spirited women invite him for a flirty night that fails when Lulu acts out. Later, Lulu attacks a Middle Eastern hotel guest because of her war training, and police treat it like a hate crime. Those beats poke at progressive talk and city rules more than they preach them. The main story stays on healing, service, and the dog.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dog.
Woke representation / casting
Lead is a white male Army Ranger. Supporting cast includes a black woman as a short-stop Portland romantic beat, an Indigenous actress as a nearly silent ex-wife, and a few other non-white roles. Diversity is present but small and not sold as the point of the movie. No clear “quota girlboss” pattern in the main story.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Progressive bar talk (war, big oil, elite guilt) and “hate crime” police language show up and are easy to hear. The film mostly uses them for friction or jokes, not as sermons the hero learns to preach. Dialogue stays brief next to the road-trip and dog plot.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arcs are PTSD, friendship, duty, and healing with a war dog. Brief jabs at “toxic masculinity” and soft “open up your feelings” growth sit inside a classic broken-soldier story, not a race/gender identity campaign. Identity politics are not the engine of the plot.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mild critique of how broken vets and dogs get discarded after service. Stronger comedy targets progressive Portland manners than the Army itself. Not a modern activist hit on patriarchy, whiteness, or core Western faith. Pro-soldier tone is clear.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No major right-leaning wave calling the film woke, DEI, or identity propaganda. Coverage that used “woke” language mostly cast Dog as the opposite: pro-troop and anti-woke. Pro-DEI complaints about limited diversity do not count here.
0%
Creator track record context
Key directors and writers (Tatum, Carolin, Rodriguez) and most producers sit low on the cached woke scale. Sigel is a bit higher. Casting director Kaufman is the clearest higher mark from past LGBTQ/identity-heavy work. Overall crew context for this title is mild, not activist-led.
