Keith Gill is a regular dad and stock fan who posts online as Roaring Kitty. During COVID, he puts his savings into GameStop stock and tells followers why. Small buyers pile in, the price explodes, and hedge funds that bet against the store lose huge money. The movie is a funny, tense underdog story about little people versus rich Wall Street bosses.
The film’s big message is about unfair money power: wealth gaps, a “rigged” market, and regular people trying to stick it to billionaires. Viewers also meet everyday buyers built as a mixed group—including a Latina nurse, a Latino GameStop worker, and a college couple who are girlfriends (one black, one white). Their romance is shown on screen with kisses and a party beat. That mix of class-fight politics plus clear LGBTQ side characters is what most people would notice, not race lectures or gender swaps of the real lead.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dumb Money.
Woke representation / casting
Clear mix in key “everyday investor” roles: Latina nurse, Latino clerk, and an interracial lesbian college couple shown as partners with kisses and a sexual party beat. Lead Keith is still a white man based on the real person. Diversity is easy to notice but not pure “quota lead” casting; the queer couple raises the weight.
48%
Woke political dialogue
Lots of little-guy vs Wall Street talk—system feels rigged, stick it to the rich, hold the line. Brief Occupy-style framing. Lines are class and money anger more than race/gender activist speeches. Noticeable if you listen, not identity sermon heavy.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Main arc is class fight and money power, not race or gender politics as the core plot. A full side plot follows a lesbian couple and student debt, so LGBTQ identity is real on screen and must count, but it is not the whole movie.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The whole film attacks big finance, short sellers, and huge wealth gaps in COVID times. Billionaires look clueless and greedy; the market feels fixed against normal people. This is modern “system is unfair” capitalism critique, stronger than light rich-people jokes, but still class-focused more than culture-war identity critique.
55%
Woke character or canon changes
True-story film invents or blends composite buyers, including an interracial lesbian couple not taken straight from one real couple’s life. That is an identity-leaning rewrite of the real crowd, not a neutral timeline trim.
45%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few right-leaning or anti-woke users blasted the “woke” lesbian couple and class-war framing. No big mainstream anti-woke storm. Complaints exist but stay small and scattered.
22%
Creator track record context
Driven mainly by Gillespie’s moderate anti-elite/class-satire lean and wealth-gap talk on this film. Other named producers and assistant directors score low or zero on woke/activist records, which pulls the overall crew context down.
