Leo Russo lives in Queens with his wife, Angela, their quiet teenage son, Sticks, and a loud Italian-American family. Leo works in the family construction business, but his real pride comes from watching Sticks play high school basketball. When a college scout offers Sticks a chance at a scholarship, Leo treats the offer as a way to give his son a better future and to make his own life feel important. The warm comedy turns darker when Leo meddles in Sticks’s breakup and risks his marriage, his job, and the family’s trust.
Sticks is shy, anxious, and unsure whether basketball or the family business should shape his future. After his girlfriend Dani ends their relationship, he begins to find his own voice through poetry and learns that growing up means choosing for himself. Angela’s fear after surviving cancer affects the couple, while Rosa faces family pressure about marriage and children. Dani also follows her own path, but these gender-role moments stay small beside the film’s main themes of family loyalty, personal choice, and letting a child become an adult.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Rosa is a single adult woman in a family where marriage and children are treated as the expected path. Dani also chooses her own path instead of following the older family’s plan. The film presents these moments as personal family tension, not as a broad activist argument about patriarchy or society. The gender-role signal is brief and minor.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No notable anti-woke backlash or complaints exist. The film avoided identity-driven content and drew quiet appreciation for its direct family focus instead.

Creator track record context
Ray Romano’s creator record is built around mainstream family comedy and everyday characters. Mark Stegemann’s work is also character-based and has no strong identity or DEI focus. Albert Berger has backed some films with a mild progressive social vision, while the other listed producers show little activist focus. This gives the title a small background signal, but it does not point to a strong creator pattern.
