Emilia Pérez

The story centers on a cartel boss who says she has always known she is a woman and changes her body and name. The film treats that change as a search for an authentic self, not as a side plot or a joke. Emilia later falls in love with Epifanía, another woman, and builds a group that helps families find missing relatives. The story gives Emilia a path toward a second chance through care, solidarity, and a new family, while her old violence still shapes the ending.

The film repeatedly shows powerful men as killers, corrupt officials, abusive partners, and rich donors who ignore victims. Rita's opening case shows a lawyer helping a powerful man escape blame for a woman's death. Rita later rejects work that made rich people richer and joins a women-led group that helps families when public offices fail. These ideas add a modern critique of male power and broken institutions, although cartel crime and corruption are also part of the basic thriller plot.

The film is loosely based on a chapter in Écoute where a male lawyer meets a gang leader who wants to change gender. The film turns that lawyer into Rita, a woman played by Zoe Saldaña, and makes her a major co-lead. The film also expands the short idea into a female-led story with a lesbian romance and a charity for missing families. That is a major identity change from the source, but the source is only a short starting point rather than a long series.

Conservative outlets such as National Review and Breitbart described the film as a woke Hollywood project built around a trans lead and identity politics. Those reports tied its awards run to diversity or trans milestones and mocked the gender-change premise. Some social posts used the same language and called the film a shallow woke agenda movie. The larger public dispute was about Mexican accuracy and trans stereotypes from critics who were not anti-woke, so this factor is real but not dominant.

Cached context rates Audiard at 30 and Razon at 25, while Mysius is higher at 62 because her work often focuses on women, minority characters, sexuality, and people who are left out. Casting directors Baras 55 and Hool 42 have representation-focused records. The other writers and producers have low or neutral cached scores. The mixed record gives supporting context for this film's identity focus, but it does not show a broad activist team.
