Hilary is a middle-aged woman who runs day-to-day work at a seaside movie theater in England in the early 1980s. She lives alone, takes medicine for serious mental health problems, and is stuck in a bad secret sex setup with her married boss. A young black man named Stephen gets a job at the theater. They grow close and start a romance, while racism, skinhead violence, and Hilary’s illness pull their lives apart. The film feels quiet and sad, with soft light on the theater and the cold sea town around it.
The movie puts race and unfair treatment front and center next to mental health and love of movies. Stephen faces racist customers, street thugs, and a late attack by a skinhead crowd that breaks into the theater. Hilary’s boss uses his power over her for sex. Sam Mendes said the film’s big themes are love, race, and cinema, and he linked the story to modern racial unrest while making it. A normal viewer would notice the interracial romance, the hate crimes, the boss’s abuse, and the “then and now” feel about racism. Queer themes are not part of the film. The social messages sit beside a personal story about loneliness and getting through hard times, not as one long speech.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Empire of Light.
Woke representation / casting
Co-lead interracial romance (white woman, young black man) is central and audience-clear. Stephen’s blackness is not background; the story builds racist abuse and a mob attack around it. Black mother and girlfriend appear in supporting roles. Original characters, not race-swaps of famous figures. Looks like deliberate identity-focused casting that the plot uses, not quiet incidental diversity.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Viewers hear racist customer abuse, skinhead threats, and Stephen pushing back when Hilary brushes racism off as someone “just being a jerk.” There is also a sharp beach rant about men. Lines teach or correct attitudes about race and power in plain moments, but the film is not wall-to-wall slogans.
40%
Identity-driven story themes
Race and mental illness run as twin main threads next to a love-of-movies story. Interracial romance, National Front-era hate, and a climactic racist attack are hard to miss. Mendes framed race as a core theme and tied the period pain to modern racial unrest. Strong social themes, still shared with personal loneliness and recovery, not a pure activist pamphlet.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The married boss uses his job power for sex with Hilary. Police are shown or framed as little help against racist thugs. Thatcher-era hard times and cold mental-health care sit in the background. Reads as critique of male power at work and weak public care more than a full modern attack on “the West,” but the power and race beats are clear.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some Reddit users and niche reviews called it SJW checklist filmmaking, social-justice fantasy, or woke detours. That is real anti-woke pushback, but it stayed small; no big national “too woke” firestorm.
18%
Creator track record context
Lead creative Mendes is low on activist history (14). Deakins is near zero. Casting and some producers score higher on diversity-friendly records (Gold 44, Harris 32, Greenfield 25). Overall crew context is mild, not a known activist team.
