Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool follows Peter Turner, a young actor from Liverpool, and Gloria Grahame, a famous American actress whose career has faded. The pair meet in a London boarding house in the late 1970s and begin an affair despite a large age gap. After they separate, Gloria becomes ill and asks Peter to take her to his parents' home in Liverpool. The film moves between warm memories and sad scenes about love, family care, lost fame, and death.
The film gives its older female lead a full romantic life, strong personal choices, and a place at the center of the story rather than treating her only as a sick person. Gloria's past as a Hollywood "bad girl" and her struggle to keep working point to sexism and ageism in the film business. The story also makes the younger man the loyal caregiver, which reverses a common older-man and younger-woman romance pattern. These ideas stay mild because the movie presents them through a private true love story instead of speeches or campaign-style messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main roles match the real people and the film's British and American setting. The movie does not present a diversity-first casting pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss acting, love, family, illness, and memory. The film does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film shows Gloria as a former "bad girl" whose work and public image are shaped by Hollywood labels. The story lets her remain sexually confident, seek love, and choose how she faces illness after her fame fades. The age gap puts an older woman at the center of a romance with a younger man and challenges a common gender pattern. The film keeps these themes inside a personal story about love and loss instead of turning them into a modern campaign message.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents old Hollywood as a place that labels Gloria as a bad girl and gives her fewer chances as she ages. The story links her fading career to harsh standards placed on women. The movie treats that unfair treatment as part of her pain. The criticism stays tied to Gloria's period career and does not become a broad attack on Western society.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film keeps the real people's identities and relationship at the center. No race, gender, sexuality, or leadership identity change is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke complaints. Other audience and news coverage discusses the romance, acting, and sadness rather than woke or DEI messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Producer Barbara Broccoli has backed stronger female roles and female-led projects in other work. That gives this production a mild gender-representation signal. The director, writers, casting director, and script supervisor have no sustained public activist pattern. Title interviews focus on love, memory, age, and care, so the wider creator context stays low.
