Father Figures follows Peter and Kyle Reynolds, twin brothers who grew up believing their father died before they were born. Peter is a divorced doctor with a teenage son who dislikes him, while Kyle is rich and carefree from a barbecue sauce deal. After their mother admits that she never knew which man fathered them, the brothers travel from Ohio through the eastern United States to question her old partners. The movie uses crude jokes, road-trip trouble, family anger, and a late serious turn as a broad R-rated comedy.
The story centers on family ties, fatherhood, and the fear that a person’s past controls his future. Peter wants an answer because he feels like a failure as a father, and Kyle wants to learn whether his easy life has a deeper cause. The brothers meet a football star, a violent former investor, a veterinarian, a hitchhiker, and other possible fathers. Their search ends when Helen reveals that she adopted them after their birth mother died, and the brothers learn that love can matter more than blood.
