Pili is a bold Brooklyn girl who loves treasure hunts. After her grandpa gets sick, she and her brother Ioane spend the summer on rural Oahu. There they find an old journal that points to lost pirate gold. The trip turns into a cave adventure with new friends, family fights, and Hawaiian legends. The tone is fun, goofy, and heartfelt, like a modern kids adventure with local culture baked in.
The score is driven by a clear cultural-identity story, not by heavy politics. Viewers see Hawaiian heritage, family roots, and respect for sacred land as big parts of the plot and ending. Marketing and press also push Hawaiian and Pacific Islander representation hard. There are light lines about tourists and land, a joke about being “too progressive,” and a girl who pushes back when a boy acts like a show-off. There is no major anti-woke backlash and no big race or gender swap of old famous characters. A normal family audience will notice the heritage and representation focus; they will not feel hit by a full activist speech film.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Finding ʻOhana.
Woke representation / casting
Main cast is largely Hawaiian and Pacific Islander in a Hawaii-set family story, which fits the setting. Press and creators still sell that choice as representation for AAPI kids. Viewers notice diverse local casting and “see yourself on screen” framing, but it is not a random race swap of known white legacy heroes.
32%
Woke political dialogue
Dialogue is mostly adventure jokes and family fights. Light identity lines include Pili saying she is “too progressive” to apologize, talk of people mistaking her for Puerto Rican, and comments about tourists or treasure hunters who disrespect the land. Not a wall of activist speeches.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
Heritage is central: Brooklyn kids relearn Hawaiian language, customs, and family history; the end has them choose life closer to those roots. Sacred Night Marchers and returning stolen offerings make respect for culture part of the climax. Normal viewers will clearly see identity and belonging as a main theme next to the treasure hunt.
47%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mild critique of tourists and treasure hunters who damage land and disturb tombs, plus a girl calling out a boy’s pushy macho flirting. Some reviews spin this as a lesson for outsiders. It is not a long attack on Western religion, capitalism, or “whiteness” as systems.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original story inspired by Goonies-style adventure, not an identity rewrite of existing named canon characters or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful right-leaning or anti-woke backlash wave found. Coverage and social talk focus on family fun, culture, and representation praise rather than “agenda” complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached crew scores are mostly low; the main lift is Strain (50), who tied this script to AAPI representation and heritage, plus Weng (18). Producers and co-director sit near the bottom of the scale, so overall creative context is mild-to-moderate, not activist-heavy.
