Fyre follows Billy McFarland as he tries to build a luxury music festival in the Bahamas with rapper Ja Rule. McFarland sells a private-island dream filled with models, famous musicians, yachts, and rich guests. He keeps promising that the event will be ready even when the money, travel, food, water, shelter, and music are not ready. The film moves from glossy ads and smiling influencers to wet tents, angry workers, stranded guests, and a tense comic disaster.
The story focuses on fraud, greed, image-making, and the power of social media to sell a fantasy. The film shows how wealthy outsiders use the island as a backdrop while Bahamian workers and vendors are left with unpaid bills. It also shows how workers, marketers, influencers, investors, and customers keep trusting a polished image after plain facts show that the plan is failing. The final warning is about shallow wealth, online fame, weak judgment, and the real cost that falls on people who were not in control.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Fyre.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The documentary shows real people connected to the festival, including promoters, models, artists, and Bahamian workers. It does not present a diversity-first cast or an identity-based casting pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
One interview includes Billy calling Andy King a “wonderful gay leader” during a crude joke about fixing a customs problem. The line makes a person’s sexuality visible, but it does not argue for a political cause. The rest of the dialogue concerns money, fraud, planning, and the festival’s collapse.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
Andy King appears as a gay man in one prominent interview segment. The film uses that fact for a sexual joke about saving the festival, not for a queer story or a lesson about identity. The main story follows McFarland’s fraud, the workers’ losses, and the power of online hype.
8%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Bahamian workers and vendors going unpaid after wealthy promoters use the island for their event. The story briefly points to an unequal relationship between outsiders and local people. The documentary mainly treats this as a failure of business and basic responsibility, rather than a broad attack on Western culture, capitalism, or traditional institutions.
10%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses real footage and interviews about the actual Fyre Festival. It does not change the race, sex, sexuality, or role of an established character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke backlash was found. Public complaints focused on the festival fraud, the film’s links to its marketing companies, and questions about fairness.
0%
Creator track record context
Chris Smith has a cached woke score of 11 and is mainly known for scam, crime, and pop-culture documentaries. Most producers have cached scores of 0 to 8, while Danny Gabai has a score of 18 because of Vice and Flee links. The group gives little support to a strong activist or identity-driven reading.
