Sara Cody is a teenager who plans to leave her family home when she turns 18. Her controlling father, Don, tricks her into a hidden basement room and keeps her there for years. He assaults her and makes her give birth to his children while Sara’s mother and sister are led to believe she ran away. Sara tries to protect the children and find a way out as Don controls the air, food, and every visit. The story is a grim crime thriller inspired by several real captivity cases, including the Josef Fritzl case. The film focuses on Sara’s survival and her bond with the children she raises in captivity. It also follows her sister Amy and mother Irene as they begin to doubt Don’s story and face what they missed. Don’s abuse is shown as his own cruelty, while the family’s silence helps hide it. Sara keeps trying to escape and protect her children, and that struggle drives the plot.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Röhm says Sara’s mother stays with Don because she wants his love and the comfort of their home. She says the family’s silence lets Don’s abuse grow and calls for people to face abuse. The film shows Don’s lies keeping Sara hidden while Irene and Amy live upstairs. That framing questions protecting a home and relationship when abuse is happening.
