Gene Handsome is a Los Angeles police detective who can read a crime scene but cannot manage his own life. He lives alone with his Great Dane and feels stuck as retirement gets closer. When a babysitter is found murdered outside a famous actor's home, Gene and his partner Fleur follow clues through a strange Hollywood neighborhood. The movie uses a dry, crude tone and tells viewers the killer at the start.
The film includes a brief gay teen stereotype in two scenes, along with a few Jewish, Japanese, and sexual jokes. These moments use identity as quick comedy, but they do not shape the murder case or Gene's personal problem. The movie gives more attention to lonely adult life, bad dating, crude sex jokes, and the gap between Gene's police skills and his weak social life. Its odd female detective helps solve the case, but the story does not turn her into an activist hero.
