Harpoon follows Jonah, a broke young man who has been friends with Richard since childhood. Richard is rich, jealous, and quick to use violence, while Sasha is his girlfriend and the person who often keeps both men under control. After Richard attacks Jonah over a suspected affair, the three take his yacht into the open sea to make peace. The boat loses power, food and water run low, and old lies turn a friendship into a bloody fight. The tone moves from dry comedy to cruel survival horror.
The clearest woke-leaning element is Sasha's rise from girlfriend, caretaker, and referee to the person who makes the last major choice. The film gives her a nursing degree and makes her the most practical voice while the two men act jealous, violent, and foolish. She cheats, lies, and kills to protect herself, so the story presents female power through a nasty survival twist rather than a clean heroic lesson. That idea is important to the final part of the story, but the film does not turn it into a wider message about identity, politics, or social change.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Harpoon.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The three main friends are two men and one woman in a modern Canadian story. The film does not make their identities a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue uses crude sex talk and insults about being a man or a bitch. The film does not use those lines to promote identity, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film repeatedly places Sasha between the two men as the practical mediator. The narrator calls her the girlfriend, mother, and referee of the group. Her nursing training gives her the main medical knowledge when Jonah's wound worsens. She later rejects Jonah's plan and kills him, giving her the strongest final act, although the film also shows her as an unfaithful and ruthless person.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows Richard's wealth, anger, and sense of ownership causing harm. Sasha has to manage him and Jonah while both men use violence and crude ideas about being a man. This creates a mild toxic masculinity reading, but the story treats the problem as personal abuse and betrayal. It does not attack Western institutions, religion, capitalism, or family life.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is a modern friendship story with a loose Edgar Allan Poe reference. It does not change an established character's race, sex, sexuality, or role.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke backlash or identity-politics complaint was found in the reviewed news, audience, or Reddit material. The separate X check also found no specific complaint, boycott, or defense.

Creator track record context
Rob Grant and Mike Kovac have cached scores of 0 and are mainly linked to independent genre work. Julian Black Antelope has a cached score of 62 for Indigenous representation and training work. Kurtis David Harder has 59 for queer-focused horror, while Laurie Venning has 35 and Michael Peterson has 8. These producer histories add some representation-related context, but they do not match a political message in Harpoon.
