Harriet follows Araminta Ross, a young black woman held in slavery in Maryland in 1849. After her owner threatens to sell her away from her family, she escapes on foot to Philadelphia and takes the name Harriet Tubman. She then returns to the South again and again to guide enslaved people to safety, while slave catchers and slave owners hunt her. The film has a serious, tense, and inspiring tone, with chase scenes, danger, prayer, and visions shaping her journey.
The story presents a black woman as a brave leader who acts on her own and saves others. It often shows men warning her that she cannot succeed, while Harriet proves them wrong through courage, planning, and physical skill. The film also stresses Black solidarity, freedom, and the right of women to lead, but these ideas grow from Tubman's real life rather than a modern setting. Her strong religious faith guides the story, and the film treats her visions and prayers as a real source of strength.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Harriet.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a black woman at the center as a fearless leader and gives Janelle Monáe a major role as Marie Buchanan, a free black businesswoman. Most of the Black casting fits the real people and the period. Cynthia Erivo is Nigerian-British, while Tubman was an African American woman, and that choice caused public casting debate. The role is also presented as a black female hero statement, so the factor is above a normal historical-casting score.
34%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeats speeches about slavery, freedom, and resisting laws that treat people as property. Harriet tells others that freedom is worth risking death, and she urges people to act instead of waiting for permission. The later story also connects her work to women's right to vote. These ideas come from the period and Tubman's known work, so the score stays low for woke political dialogue.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Harriet’s identity as a black woman drives nearly every part of her journey. The film follows her escape, repeated rescues, armed leadership, and later support for women's right to vote as one message about a woman of color changing history. Harriet repeatedly defeats men who tell her what she cannot do. The film presents Black solidarity and black female power as good things, which makes this a clear, recurring identity-driven theme even though the events come from her real life.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents slavery and its laws as a cruel power system that treats people as property. It also shows Gideon using male power to control Harriet and threaten her family, while other men doubt her ability to lead. Harriet rejects those limits and becomes the strongest person in the story. The critique is mostly tied to the real period, so it stays low rather than becoming a modern attack on Western culture.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes dates and combines some people for drama, but no identity-driven rewrite of a real figure or event is confirmed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The main reported dispute concerned whether a Nigerian-British actress should play an African-American icon. That argument was about casting authenticity, not a complaint that the film pushed woke or DEI politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Kasi Lemmons has a strong black feminist and protest-art profile. Gregory Allen Howard has a milder history of stories about black history and civil rights. Several producers and the casting director have representation-focused careers, while other producers have little such record. The mixed team supports a moderate creator track record context score.
