Person profile
Personal context
Clarke Peters is an American actor, writer, and director known for The Wire, Treme, and his musical Five Guys Named Moe. His work has often addressed Black life and barriers facing Black performers: he has discussed typecasting, rejected roles he felt lacked integrity for black actors, and developed Stormy about Lena Horne’s career and struggles. As a teenager, he joined protests against the Vietnam War and was arrested during a demonstration; he has also spoken about racial inequality and feeling unsafe in the United States as a black man. He has argued that race may matter in historical casting while supporting race-neutral casting in fantasy, and has criticized treating The Wire simply as a “Black show.”
