2022 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through July 3, 2022 ·
Faraday is an alien from Anthea who comes to Earth to save his dying planet. He searches for Thomas Newton, an alien who arrived decades earlier. Faraday also needs Justin Falls, a skilled scientist who has lost faith in people. The story moves between New Mexico, New York, and other parts of America. It mixes science fiction, family drama, humor, grief, and danger.
The show puts a black alien and a black female scientist at the center of its story. The creators openly said they chose Justin as a black woman because they wanted black women to lead a science fiction story. The show also stresses immigration, environmental damage, corporate power, and the need for people from different backgrounds to work together. These ideas appear across the season, but the main story remains an alien rescue mission rather than a direct political drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Woke representation / casting
The show centers on Chiwetel Ejiofor as Faraday and Naomie Harris as Justin Falls, a black female nuclear engineer. Justin is the key human scientist who helps save both planets. The creators said they intentionally wanted a black woman at the center of a science fiction story. The wider cast also includes several prominent black characters, making representation a clear production choice.
43%
Woke political dialogue
The characters discuss immigration, environmental damage, human division, and the harm caused by powerful institutions. These ideas return during the season, but the show rarely uses direct activist speeches. The dialogue mostly serves the science fiction plot and the characters’ personal problems.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
The story treats Faraday as an outsider who must live among humans and learn how people treat those who seem different. The show connects his struggle to immigration, belonging, and the value of people from different backgrounds. The plot also presents Justin as a black woman whose scientific skill is central to saving the world. These themes recur across the season.
39%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show criticizes wealthy business leaders who seek profit and control over dangerous technology. The CIA also tortures and controls people for its own goals. The story presents corporate power and government secrecy as major dangers. The criticism is recurring, but it is tied to the science fiction plot more than to modern gender or identity politics.
