2022 · Based on 1 season, 6 episodes through June 19, 2022 ·
Clare Abshire grows up in a wealthy Chicago family and keeps meeting Henry DeTamble, a man who appears at different ages because he cannot control his time travel. She meets him as a young adult, but she has known older versions of him since she was six. Their marriage must survive his sudden disappearances, his painful past, and the fear that his life will end early. The show moves between the 1990s, earlier years, and later memories, and it mixes romance, jokes, sex, danger, and sadness.
The season gives Clare a strong point of view as she tells her life story and chooses how to respond to Henry's absence. Episode three shows her and other girls exposing a boy who hurt her, and episode four shows that Clare and Charisse have a brief sexual encounter. These moments add female friendship, consent, and a small same-sex relationship thread, but they do not become the main story. The central message stays focused on love, loss, choice, and fate inside a difficult marriage.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Time Traveler's Wife.
Woke representation / casting
The series casts Desmin Borges and Natasha Lopez as Clare's recurring friends Gomez and Charisse. The novel describes Gomez as a tall blond man and calls Charisse Filipino, while the series does not keep those details exactly on screen. These are supporting roles, and no diversity-first casting message was found.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue discusses love, time travel, sex, family, abuse, consent, and fate. It does not present modern party politics, activist speeches, or DEI language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Episode 4 shows that Clare and Charisse have a brief sexual encounter. The scene adds a same-sex relationship element, but it lasts only part of one episode and does not define either woman. Henry and Clare's heterosexual marriage remains the central story.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Episode 3 presents Jason's violence toward Clare and lets Clare and other girls expose his abuse. Episode 4 also shows Clare rejecting Gomez's claim on her and choosing her own relationship. These scenes give some weight to male entitlement and female choice. The season does not build a wider attack on family, religion, or Western institutions.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Episode 4 gives Clare and Charisse a brief sexual encounter, while the novel presents them as friends. The change adds a same-sex relationship moment to the TV version. The main marriage and time-travel setup stay close to the source. The change is small and does not reshape the whole story.
15%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public complaints centered on grooming concerns, sexual assault, confusing time travel, and weak writing. No meaningful anti-woke or DEI complaint was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Steven Moffat's cached creator score is 40/100 and reflects strong female characters and support for diverse casting in principle, with no clear activist focus. Audrey Niffenegger's cached score is 10/100. David Nutter and the producers have cached scores from 12 to 21, with limited evidence of identity-driven politics. This gives the title mild supporting context, not a strong creator-led signal.
